Why I Changed My Business Name
This week marked a milestone I've been contemplating for a year:
I've bid farewell to the brand name I've carried since the start of my business—The Curious Life—and embraced simplicity by using my own name, Scott Robson Coaching.
Back in 2016, when I birthed The Curious Life, my world was vastly different: a freshly certified coach in Brooklyn, straddling working in the publishing industry while also burning the midnight oil to launch my practice.
The genesis of The Curious Life stemmed from a desire to introduce clients to the unbounded thrill of genuine curiosity. I craved that for them and, truthfully, for myself.
Exiting the publishing realm became inevitable. The industry was contracting, and my employer's acquisition hinted at impending changes. Amidst the looming uncertainty, I saw an opportunity.
Transitioning full-time into my business post-layoff was a rollercoaster of successes and failures. I worked all hours, enrolled clients, initiated programs, pursued further training, and dabbled in podcasting and group coaching. Amidst the experiments, confidence in my coaching abilities increased.
My “Year of Visibility” in 2022, marked by the Less Than Likely podcast and the launch of a new group program, led me to embrace endeavors that may have terrified the 2016 version of me but actually felt incredibly liberating. Gradually, claiming space became natural and I felt more authentically present. A shift was subtly underway.
And with that, despite my love for the purity of curiosity, something started to feel amiss. The Curious Life no longer resonated and, in truth, started to feel like a facade—a younger me hiding behind a name.
I hold a soft spot for The Curious Life, but the urge to put myself at the core of my business persisted. Realizing this, I knew change was on the horizon — and, if I’ve learned anything, leaning into inevitable change can be a huge gift.
With a redesign of my brand long overdue, I worked through a six-month-long waiting list in my Design & Thrive program (where I combine website and brand design with business coaching). I doubled up on clients and created an opening to finally see what this redefining would look like.
The outcome surprised me—though it shouldn't have—I found myself reflected in the design, mirroring my current home of Topanga Canyon, California, with its mountains, gnarled oak trees, sagebrush, coyotes, and bobcats. I'm thrilled and eager to share this evolution with you.
I genuinely hope my journey resonates with you in some way.
We all harbor concealed layers, whether in our businesses, personal lives, or relationships. Sometimes, nudges are needed to awaken them. But once they stir, they're impactful and create even larger changes we can’t overlook.
